Another frenetic weekend of Premier League football has passed as by with some high-scoring games. Last weekend saw only 2 clean sheets, reflecting the attacking style of football we are now familiar with in the Premier League. Here are 3 things that we learned in Gameweek 6 in the Premier League.
Ipswich have what it takes to stay in the Premier League
Each week, Ipswich continue to surprise me with their resilience and ability to churn out results. Grabbing a point of of Champions League side Aston Villa in a 2-2 draw on the weekend, Ipswich are now on a 4-match unbeaten run since their difficult opening 2 games against Man City and Liverpool.
Indeed, The Tractor Boys have still not secured their first PL win, but their performances have been full of character and commitment. I see lots of comparisons between Ipswich and Luton Town from last season. Neither side are solid in defence nor create a plethora of chances, but they have a doggedness which allows them to grind out results against nearly anyone.
When fellow promoted sides Southampton and Leicester are struggling as well as slow starts from the likes of Crystal Palace, Wolves and Everton, there is much optimism at Portman Road. I think if Ipswich can bolster their squad in the January transfer window as well with some experienced Premier League players, they will give themselves a strong chance of staying up.
Manchester United are Still in a Spot of Bother
Spurs huge 0-3 win brought a smile to my face, but completely the opposite for United fans. It's remarkable, from a Spurs fan's perspective that despite 2 trophies in the last 2 seasons, The Red Devils are still all over the place.
Spurs completely outclassed Man United. Even with Bruno Fernandes' debatable red card, the momentum of the game was not really affected, it was all with Spurs. The Lilywhites completely dominated the ball and were in control of the game.
The biggest cause for concern was the disarray of the United team. Not doing basics such as accurate passing, pressing as a team and working back when they lose the ball, it was extremely easy for Spurs. The players' body language spoke volumes.
Many United fans would argue that the disarray of the board was the main reason why the team wasn't performing. But Ten Hag has now spent £560m on new players and although having 2 trophies to show for it, the overall performances are far below average. The Red Devils are no longer the mentality monsters they were under Fergie. The culture, tactics and mentalities of all involved at Manchester United need to be changed. As of now, Ten Hag is surely favourite to be the first manager sacked this season?
Cole Palmer is Different Class
Cole Palmer's impressive showing in Chelsea's 4-2 win over Brighton has reminded us yet again what a special talent this lad is. To think that he wasn't starting for England in the Euros completely blows my mind, as he's evidently one of the best players in the world right now.
Palmer set a Premier League record for being the first player to score 4 goals in the first half on Saturday. He genuinely could've had 5 or maybe 6 goals as well as some assists if his teammates could finish his chances.
His match stats speak volumes:
4 Goals (xG 2.41)
4 Key passes
3 Big chances created (xA 0.62)
5 Shot on target, 2 shots off target, 1 hit the woodwork
2 Big chances missed
Quite simply sensational stats for a player that has everything in his locker. Additionally, Palmer has a very focused mindset, letting his football do the talking. Man City will be rueing their decision to let him go as he has now made Chelsea his club, the sky being the limit for the young man.
